SA Lotto — How to Play, Draw Days & Number Frequency Guide
What is the SA Lotto?
The South African National Lottery (SA Lotto) is operated by Ithuba Holdings and is one of South Africa’s most popular lottery games. Draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 20:58 SAST and are broadcast live on SABC 2.
How to Play SA Lotto
Players choose 6 numbers from 1 to 52. During the draw, 6 main balls and 1 bonus ball are drawn. You don’t need to match the bonus ball to win a prize — it only comes into play for the second-division prize (matching 5 main balls + the bonus).
- Division 1 (Jackpot): Match all 6 main balls
- Division 2: Match 5 main balls + bonus ball
- Division 3: Match 5 main balls
- Division 4: Match 4 main balls + bonus ball
- Division 5: Match 4 main balls
- Division 6: Match 3 main balls + bonus ball
- Division 7: Match 3 main balls
- Division 8: Match 2 main balls + bonus ball
Draw Schedule
SA Lotto draws are held twice weekly — every Wednesday and Saturday at 20:58 SAST. Results are published immediately after the draw on the official National Lottery website and app.
SA Lotto Number Frequency — Hot & Cold Numbers
Over the history of the SA Lotto, certain numbers have appeared more frequently than others. These are often called “hot” numbers. Conversely, numbers that have appeared rarely are called “cold” numbers. Numbers that are overdue — meaning they haven’t appeared in many draws — are sometimes called “due” numbers.
Win-a-Lotto’s Frequency Pattern Analysis engine tracks all three categories across the complete SA Lotto draw history and uses them to generate weighted number suggestions for registered members.
SA Lotto Jackpot — How Big Can It Get?
The SA Lotto jackpot starts at R2 million and rolls over whenever no ticket matches all 6 numbers. Rollovers are capped — once the jackpot reaches a certain level, the prize pool must be paid out (a “must-fall” draw). South Africa’s largest SA Lotto jackpot on record exceeded R110 million.
Odds of Winning the SA Lotto
The odds of matching all 6 main numbers are approximately 1 in 20,358,520. The overall odds of winning any prize are significantly better — around 1 in 38.
